Untreated Decay in Washington Third Graders
In the Washington State Department of Health’s 2023-2024 Smile Survey, 19 percent of third graders had untreated tooth decay. The same measure stood at 12 percent in 2016. More than 8,800 second and third graders at 87 public elementary schools took part.
Two other measures moved with it. The share needing dental treatment climbed from 11 percent to 19 percent. Urgent need for pain or swelling held steady at 2 percent. Sealants were the bright spot, reaching 48 percent of third graders against a 32 percent national estimate. Federal Rules on Amalgam Waste
Since July 14, 2020, most dental offices removing amalgam and draining to a public sewer must run an amalgam separator. Under the EPA rule, 40 CFR Part 441, separators must capture at least 95 percent of amalgam solids. The EPA expects a 5.1-ton yearly drop in mercury discharges.
The EPA notes mercury builds up in fish and shellfish once it reaches waterways. The rule addresses what flows downstream. Protecting you in the chair is a separate job with its own protocol.
