Dark Circles and Your Airway

Before you reach for that concealer or drink that second cup of coffee, read this.

Those big under-eye bags or dark circles could be a symptom of more than just how much sleep you got (or didn’t get) last night.

There is a growing awareness within the dental community about the relationship between dark circles and blockage in your upper airway. While some signs of an airway impediment may be more obvious (such as large tonsils, heavy mouth-breathing, etc.), your eyes can also play a significant role in cluing us in to what’s going on with your overall oral health.

The Connection Between Allergens and Dark Circles

Congestion or inflammation in your upper airways (sinuses) can lead to poor drainage of localized blood vessels. This poor drainage can lead to slight swelling and cause the under-eye skin to appear darker. The result is what we refer to as under-eye bags or dark circles.

One of the most common sources of this inflammation is allergies. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may notice that in the spring or fall your under-eye area may be darker. While a pain for your complexion and your sinuses, seasonal allergies related to things like pollen often pass quickly. However, pet hair, mold, or other indoor allergens may cause long-term airway inflammation. This translates to year-round dark eye circles and under-eye bags. The air quality in the city you live in or whether someone in your household smokes can also affect the inflammation in your airways.

Long-term airway inflammation can lead to more than just eye bags. It can affect your sleep, your mood, and your overall health.

So what can you do about it? At Ecological Dentistry we offer Vivos Craniofacial Solutions that can help increase airflow. By opening up the airways our solutions alleviate your blocked airway. This leads to better sleep, deeper breathing, and (you guessed it!) reduced eye bags.
