Effects of Wifi on Dental Amalgam Fillings
by Ecologic | Apr 8, 2022 | Chew on This
It’s a known fact that dental amalgam fillings contain toxic mercury that can cause a wide array of health issues. But did you know that the adverse effects of mercury can be exacerbated by wifi?
A 2016 study published in the Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering made a connection between mercury release from dental amalgam restorations and radiation from wi-fi devices.
The Study
The study, thought to be the first of its kind, aimed, in part, to measure the impacts that our daily exposure to electromagnetic fields can have on our health.
The study was performed on teeth that were filled with mercury-containing dental amalgam. The experiment was conducted in a room with a wi-fi router, positioned 30 cm away from the teeth. The router exchanged data with a laptop located 20 meters away. The teeth were exposed to the radio frequencies for 20 minutes. A control group was kept outside of the experiment room while the experiment was being conducted.
The Results
The researchers conducting this study measured the amount of mercury in the saliva of each group. The results clearly showed that the amount of mercury found in the saliva of the test group was nearly twice that of the control. According to these findings, it can be inferred that radio frequency-producing devices can have an impact on the release of mercury from amalgam fillings.
Where to Go From Here?
It’s been stated multiple times on our blog that mercury is a highly toxic metal that can cause a wide range of physical and psychological issues. So, how do we go about solving the issue of radio-frequency radiation exposure increasing mercury release from dental amalgam?
There are two paths forward. The first and most unrealistic would be to stop all wi-fi use and radio-frequency exposure to curb the effects that this exposure can have on amalgam fillings. This option is unrealistic for many reasons, not least of which would be the huge efforts it would require for our society to collectively decide that wi-fi is dangerous.
The second, and most realistic option to complete on the individual level is to opt for non-mercury-containing fillings, and to have any current mercury-containing fillings removed by a licensed professional.
Understanding the Dangers of Dental Amalgam Fillings
It is a known fact that mercury is a neurotoxic that has many adverse health consequences, including muscular weakness, impaired vision, lack and loss of coordination, and more. Constant exposure to mercury from dental amalgam fillings puts individuals at risk for these and more health problems.
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a leading advocate for the discontinuation of mercury containing amalgam in dentistry, noted the FDA’s updated warning of the dangers of dental mercury amalgam.
The warning, which was announced in September of 2020, gave recommendations to certain at-risk groups that may have adverse health effects related to the use of mercury-containing dental amalgam.
These groups include:
- Women who are nursing, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant
- Children six-years-old and younger
- Individuals with impaired kidney function
- People with prior neurological conditions and illness, and
- Those who have an allergy to mercury or dental amalgam
IAOMT notes that while these recommendations are a step in the right direction, it is important to keep fighting for recognition of the fact that dental mercury is dangerous for everyone, not just those deemed “at risk” by the FDA.
A S.M.A.R.T. Solution
Removing mercury-containing dental amalgams can help protect your health. If you don’t have any dental amalgam in your mouth you won’t need to worry about the effects of wifi on mercury off-gassing.
If you do have dental amalgam fillings that require removal, Dr. Carla Yamashiro DDS can perform safe, certified removal. Ecological Dentistry is S.M.A.R.T. (safe mercury amalgam removal technique) certified and can safely remove mercury-containing dental amalgam fillings without risking further exposure to you or our team.
